In Navarre, riders need dragons just as much as the dragons need riders. Riders need the dragons so that they can channel magic (which is how they have wards to protect Navarre), and the dragons need riders so that the wards can safeguard their hatching grounds.

This book begins with threshing advice for dragonkind professors, like Professor Kaori. Trial by Fire: Threshing Advice for Dragonkind Professors is written by Kaori’s predecessor: Colonel Thadeus Palme.

Colonel Palme warns that no artist has flawlessly depicted every distinguishing mark of a dragon, which makes telling descendants apart difficult. He also admits that his memory has become less reliable in the last decade and this is shown in several of these Threshing Day stories, where dragons are under the radar and pretending to be another, younger dragon.

BRENNAN

Battle Brief

It’s 9 years before the start of fourth wing and Brennan Sorrengail, the oldest Sorrengail sibling is about to enter the forest but Violet’s big brother is STRUGGLING. He’s terrified of becoming the greatest disappointment in the Sorrengail line.

Before he can officially start his Threshing day Extravaganza, PAPA ASHER SORRENGAIL steps out of the trees. He’s here with some much needed fatherly advice about which dragon to bond—it doesn’t have to be a reasonable, predictable one as long as he makes it out alive that’s all that matters.

Once in the forest Brennan channels his little sister and climbs a tree for the best vantage point. And it works, kinda, Marbh finds him and wants to play a game. If Brennan can find his seat WITHOUT touching the ground then he’s worthy to bond with. Marbh doesn’t make it easy but Brennan makes his way out of the tree like a flying squirrel and is officially a RIDER!

Key Takeaways:

  • We get insight into the Sorrengail family dynamic, with how Lilith is the spine of the family and Asher is the heart
    • Brennan is his mother’s favorite and he feels the weight of her expectations
    • However, we see ON THE PAGE, how Brennan’s very close and the most himself around his father
    • There’s so many breadcrumbs about Papa Sorrengail’s research and how he’s often gone on secret missions for months at a time
    • Papa S also gives a bracelet to Brennan that contains a black bead—this is a bracelet that Asher has apparently worn since… Forever
  • Papa Sorrengail’s advice to Brennan about maybe bonding an orange dragon would be good balance for his eldest
    • How ironic, that the best advice Brennan got for Threshing Day came from his scribe father
    • Because, yes, as Marb says—Brennan is boring, and needs a little unpredictability in his life
  • Brennan has the idea to write the book of Brennan for Mira while he’s climbing a tree looking for a dragon!
    • He gets the idea from reflecting how his mom didn’t tell him anything about what to expect, and how that would have been nice

MIRA

Battle Brief

Jumping forward 3 years, Mira Sorrengail is a woman on a mission, ready to bond, with only one dragon on her mind–a green clubtail named Teine. She took one look at him during Presentation and KNEW he was going to be hers.

Without a visit from Mom or Dad, Mira heads into the valley with a squadmate and searches for her dragon from a tree! It’s not long before her Instincts are telling her to go in THAT direction and who is she to question them?

Back on the ground a ruby-red dragon appears and her squadmate is off to bond this dragon. But moments later through the trees is the green clubtail Mira’s been looking for in all his glory–Tiene.

No matter what he does, Mira REFUSES to back down—even as Tiene drags his talon down and into her leg. Her tough reaction ultimately earns his respect.

Brennan may belong to Lilith, Violet to Asher, but Mira? She belongs to herself and now Tiene.

Key Takeaways:

  • This feeling of not belonging in her family is a theme throughout Mira’s POV
    • Brennan is her mother’s, Violet is their father’s, and Mira is no one’s
      • Telling herself instead, all three other Sorrengails are hers
  • With Mira’s story being at the beginning of the Rebellion, it’s really interesting to get her POV on Tyrrendor wanting to separate from Navarre
    • She mentions that she sees where Fen Riorson is coming from but succeeding and breaking apart their kingdom is nothing short of pure evil
    • But from this we also learn that Brennan and Lilth are on the front lines (despite Brennan having just graduated, it’s because he is a powerful Mender and very needed)
  • We get a peek into the signets to Sorrengail generations
    • Mira, Violet and Brennan’s grandmother controlled fire, and their great grandfather wielded the tides

XADEN

Battle Brief

2 years before Violet’s Threshing, Xaden “Well the fuck aware” Riorson gives the other Marked Ones a pep talk of don’t fucking die, then waltzes into the field with his honey bear, Garrick, by his side.

Soon after entering the valley, bully prince, Alic Tauri Baran has his dagger to Garrick’s throat. But Xaden and the Prince’s lackeys aren’t the only ones watching, Molvic and Sgaeyl are nearby waiting to see what will happen next.

Unfortunately for Alic, Xaden is too strong of an opponent, leaving Alic and his buddies dead. After his lovely show of strength, Sgaeyl’s like “I like that one, I think I’ll keep him” before telling Xaden that she bonded his grandfather before him and NOT his Great Uncle.

The two solidify their bond after Sgaeyl agrees with Xaden’s plan of burning this place to the fucking ground.

Key Takeaways:

  • We see from Xaden’s POV the scene with Alic and witness just how big of a dick the Tauri prince is
    • He beat up and tried to kill Garrick in his sleep, knowing that as the King’s son, he was safe from the Codex’s strict rule against that
    • With these marked ones, Alic had all the “na na na, my father squashed your father’s rebellion” vibes
  • in Xaden’s POV is Sgaeyl has a reputation so fierce that on Kaori’s notes in the compendium of Dragonkind, she is the only dragon we know of who has a note next to her name.
    • “DO NOT APPROACH UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES”
    • She was also not at Presentation because that’s not her thing
      • Sgyael is known to have 3 previous riders:
        • One she left for dead
        • The second, allegedly killed
        • And the third died before graduation
  • Xaden doesn’t know that dragons are seeking out the marked ones
    • He’s quite surprised when Sgyael bonds him and drops the bomb that he is the grandson of Maxim Riorson
      • Which confuses Xaden because he was under the belief that Maxim Riorson was his Great Uncle
      • He tells Sgyael that his grandfather was Corbin Riorson
        • To which, Sgyael says “If your grandmother said so, I suppose.”
        • Which sends Xaden spiraling about what that means, with his father being the oldest twin

GARRICK

Battle Brief

While Xaden is off Bonding a menace, Garrick is thinking about the love of his life, IMOGEN! And trying not to get burned alive by an orange club tail.

All while simultaneously ignoring a Dragon speaking into his mind to ‘come’.

Garrick FINALLY makes his way towards his dragon and notes that Chradh has the voice of a mature male… but the records say he’s 27 and never bonded before?

Welcome welcome welcome the first lying dragon.

Key Takeaways:

  • During her Threshing Day midnight release interview, Rebecca said Chradh is not to be underestimated
    • Cradgh is most definitely not his real name
    • He is an older dragon who hints at how he’s been waiting for Garrick and that he previously bonded a direct descendent of Garrick’s family
    • But he does not reveal his true name… or any other details
  • Garrick and Imogen
    • While she’s not physically on the page, we learn that Garrick has been in love with Imogen ever since she punched him in the face at 9 years old
      • And he would do ANYTHING to be able to travel to her
      • Aka he developed his second signet out of the need to see her

DAIN

Battle Brief

Dain is approached by his Father before Threshing Day and it turns out Daddy Aetos thinks he knows what’s best for his son—nepotism. Even going as far as talking to a green dragon on Dain’s behalf–thinking Green would be most fitting for his son.

In the forest, Dain climbs a tree and it’s a good thing he was in this one because a 2nd-year observer goes tumbling out. Dain reaches out and snatches her midfall, saving her life and collecting a debt. The very one he’ll use in Fourth Wing to place Violet on his squad.

Under him two dragons approach: one green, one red. After contemplating for a long moment, Dain makes a leap of faith on to the RED dragon, praying to all of the gods that this is the dragon that is speaking to him. It’s a damn good thing he guessed correct.

Key Takeaways:

  • The biggest takeaway from Dain’s POV is his relationship with his father
    • We see how much Daddy Aetos smothers his son, the pressure he puts on him, and his manipulation
    • We also get backstory on Dain’s mother, who left her son behind and he wonders if it’s because he’s the spitting image of his dad
      • She stopped writing to Dain a year ago (so, 2 years ago at the start of Fourth Wing) – and it hurts Dain that he’ll never know what really happened
    • According to Daddy Aetos, she took off because he wasn’t able to protect her with the Tyrish rebelling
  • We’ve known since the end of FW and especially IF how much of a snake Daddy Aetos is
    • In this POV we see just HOW manipulative he has been toward his son
      • Daddy Aetos telling him to watch the marked ones like a hawk
        • Telling his son that they are up to know good and that Dain needs to watch and report anything they do that is out of Codex
  • It’s also very significant that Dain “chooses” a red dragon, instead of the green right there
    • He’s pulled in two directions, and goes against his father’s wishes – following his gut instead

BODHI

Battle Brief

Bodhi is giving the best damn motivational speech he can muster and while it’s no Xaden, he really did try.

Once Bodhi enters the valley, it’s Xaden who comes up and tells him which Dragon will bond him. Eliminating that sense of choice and discovery for himself.

Which leads Bodhi to recklessly jump in front of a blue clubtail as his way to take back his own agency in this bonding experience. Molvic would have incinerated him if Cuir hadn’t swooped down and plucked him off the ground.

Cuir promises to choose Bodhi everyday until his death or demise… Which turns out, those are not the same thing.

Key Takeaways:

  • Throughout Bodhi’s POV, we get a front row seat to how he feels inferior to Xaden
    • Most days, he’s content with his role as a balance to Xaden, but today he just wants to be seen as his own person and not Xaden’s cousin
  • Because Bodhi is in the first unbonded marked ones group who is being mentored by Rider Marked Ones group
    • We get to see what has changed in the last year for marked ones
      • While for Xaden and Garrick, their dragons sought them out
      • Bodhi’s year (and most years after this) are told who they are going to bond
      • Which doesn’t sit right for Bodhi
        • Which is why he goes after Molvic at first
          • BUT because Cuir has waited to bond BODHI SPECIFICALLY

IMOGEN

Battle Brief

Imogen stomps off into the forest and she’s fucking pissed. After presentation a couple days ago, she went to bed with a fancy new bright orange Relic on her hip and the kicker? The dragon who gave it to her is supposedly dead.

While she’s mentally arguing with her dragon in the valley, Imogen stumbles upon Garrick. Who is ready to drop all pretenses and be the one and only man for her. Unfortunately for him, Imogen has no intentions of letting him close just so he can die like everybody else she’s cared for in her life

You know what would distract her from this conversation? Her Dragon channeling before they’ve even had their first flight.

Apparently “Glane” which is DEFINITELY not her real name also has a bad attitude and a pension for roasting Navarrians, like Imogen’s best friend Quinn, on sight. But with some help from Imogen, her friend is safe, making “Glane’s” kill count Zero.

Key Takeaways:

  • Glane was Imogen’s grandmother’s dragon, who Imogen immediately recognized when “Glane” was projected in Kaori’s class
    • Imogen got her dragon relic soon after Presentation, revealing the dragon went ahead and bonded her
  • We’ve known from Violet’s POV that Imogen has had it bad for Garrick, and saw in his POV that he’s had it bad for her
    • But now we get to see WHY Imogen believes they cannot be together
    • Because Imogen believes that everyone who is close to her ends up dead and she refuses to have Garrick be on that list
  • We also find out that Imogen was one of only three marked ones fostered alone (Sloane being another)
    • And it has strongly impacted her view on self preservation and love

RHIANNAN

Battle Brief

It is Violet’s Threshing year and we’re kicking it off in Rhiannon’s head. She is ready for today!

Rhi woke up this morning with the image AND voice of a Green Daggertail in her mind and besides making sure she doesn’t get roasted alive, her threshing is a walk in the park.

But while physically Rhi had no issues, she struggled to leave Visia behind when a dragon melted half her face off. Don’t worry Visia, Squad Leader Matthias will make sure you get another shot next year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Her POV shone as a future leader, and especially squad leader
    • We also learn that first-year repeats have to be willingly taken in by a squad leader
      • which means Rhi takes Visia in next year, like Dain took Sawyer in this year

SAWYER

Battle Brief

Sawyer is back at it for round two and this time he’s only leaving as a rider… or a corpse. Anything but unbonded—again.

This time he’s determined to do the opposite of what he did last time. meaning it’s time to buddy up with Trina! Unfortunately for Trina, though, she might have found her Dragon first but she was unable to keep her seat.

Behind Sawyer, stands a combative red swordtail–Sliseag– And he refuses to let Sawyer beat himself up over something that was not his fault. The only reason Sawyer didn’t bond last year was because Sliseag was not yet able or ready to bond. This fiery Red Dragon is drawn to the anger brewing within Sawyer.

With that in mind Sawyer climbs on to Sliseag’s back and they fly off to the flight field.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sawyer’s POV gives us a glimpse into his previous year – and how, at threshing, he got swatted by a green’s scorpiontail tail and we can presume he was too injured to continue, winding up in the infirmary for 2 weeks
    • And he carries so much resentment about having done everything right only to fail and need to redo his first year
  • We know Sawyer as a very level headed person from the main story line
    • But here we get to see a little more of his anger and embarrassment that has been festering for a year since the last unsuccessful threshing day
      • We learn from Sliseag that it is BECAUSE of his anger in Sawyer that Sliseag matches within himself
        • And he has one rule for the rider: Sawyer can present himself however he wants to everyone else, but he will NOT mask the anger or anything else within him to Sliseag
  • After they bond, Sawyer finally understands this concept of both dragon and rider needing to be ready to bond at the right time
    • And thinks how he would have waited another year if it meant Sliseag was waiting for him at the end of it

RIDOC

Battle Brief

Ridoc can’t keep anything down on his threshing day and the poor boy is puking his guts up. He just needs a drink of water and everything will be okay, but when he finds a stream, he gets suddenly drenched from head to toe.

Who the fuck would dare splash him? Only a young mischievous Brown swordtail named AOTROM!

Ridoc refuses to bond a dragon identical to himself. But Aotrom isn’t giving up that easy, with a few more pranks that leave Ridoc looking like a feathered goose, Ridoc’s competitive nature kicks in and thus the prank war begins!

But first Ridoc has to plant his ass in Aotrom’s seat. Best way to do that? Sticky sap hand! Too bad for Aotrom the sap is in place he can’t reach… If only someone had some ice to freeze it off.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ridoc’s POV hints how he’s learned to leverage his humor as a tactic to cut the tension between his parents constantly fighting
  • Ridoc is also convinced he should have a dragon more mature and put together to balance him out and guide the way
    • In fact, he really doesn’t want a dragon that matches his personality – but Aotrom believes they “share a kinship in being underestimated by those around them”
    • Instead of being with a dragon that tries to mold him into something he’s not, Ridoc bonds a dragon who considers him his equal

LIAM

Battle Brief

Our goodest boy Liam, sits under a tree whittling away while the cadets off in the distance scream in fear. His instincts were telling him that he needed to sit here and wait for his dragon to find him.

Xaden makes a guest appearance and turns out he was hoping that Tairn would bond with LIAM. But as we all know, that’s not how it’ll pan out, instead Tairn will bond a 5-ft nothing pain-in-his-ass General’s daughter.

Time’s up and Xaden has to go help Sgaeyl as Violet gets involved with Sgaeyl’s “pet” (aka Andarna), leaving Liam Alone to start the next—and last—chapter of his life as Deigh’s rider.

Key Takeaways:

  • Like Imogen, Liam doesn’t receive notice from an older rider who he is going to bond
    • He already knew it was going to be Deigh, so much so that he’s already started carving his dragon
    • While Deigh openly admits that he’s had a previous rider, and that his line has always favored Mairis, we don’t know who exactly Deight has previously bonded
  • Important to remember that Deigh’s dragon line is deeply connected to the Mairi family
    • And Deigh is ready for him and Liam, together, to take on the evil that plagues the continent

SLOANE

Battle Brief

What better way to make Liam’s story hurt more than for it to be followed up by his little sister?

634 AU – one year after FW, so we’re in Iron Flame, sloane mairi enters the threshing forest with a numb heart and a death wish. She doesn’t care about bonding, she doesn’t care about the rider’s quadrant, she doesn’t care about surviving… Leading her to feel she should just die, because there’s no one waiting for her outside of these trees.

Imogen is here to prove her wrong though. The Marked Ones are here for Sloane, and as much as she hates it, Violet is here for her. To brighten her spirits, Imogen gives Sloane the carving of Deigh Liam had on him when he died and a dragon’s name—Thoirt.

But Sloane doesn’t want to find her dragon. She’s stepping in front of every Dragon she can in the hopes of being incinerated, so she can join her family in the afterlife.

Though she didn’t plan on Dain ‘eyes here’ Ateos tackling her to the ground and saving her life. Which brings us to Thoirt’s arrival – who is Deigh’s Dragon sister. In other words… both Thoirt and Sloane lost their brothers at Ressen and maybe just maybe these two fractured broken souls can heal each other.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sloane has given up on the will to live, and she hates the fact that the riders quadrant creates weapons
    • She does not want power whatsoever
  • DAIN BREAKS THE CODEX FOR HER!!
    • He shares how he hates himself for what happened with Liam more than Sloane could ever hate him
    • He seized the moment to save a Mairi, instead of not interfere and feel a sense of responsibility for another Mairi death
  • Imogen informs her that Thoirt is already searching for her, that their dragon line favors the Mairi family

AARIC

Battle Brief

Ever since he heard that Molvic was spotted, Aaric has been dead set on finding and bonding with him. Even though the last three times a prince of Navarre walked these woods, he didn’t come out alive.

Turns out Molvic appreciates that Aaric isn’t like his brother Alic—the last person Molvic was drawn to—and Molvic knows that Aaric isn’t here to sit back and twiddle his thumbs while his father hides secrets from their people.

Aaric doesn’t give a flying fuck what happens to the monarchy. He is ready to fix the travesty that his father has created and that the Empyrean has enabled. Because together they are going to tear this Kingdom apart.

Key Takeaways:

  • Aaric is no nonsense and won’t back down until Molvic agrees to bond him
    • He proves his worthiness by his determination and preservation
  • What’s interesting about this POV is that Molvic is in almost every. Fucking. Threshing story
    • There is some mention of a blue clubtail out in the valley looking around
  • Last but not least, we learn that Aaric’s mother saw to his tutelage
    • She has since passed away, but we can guess she is the reason Aaric is so smart with politics, culture, and languages
    • Aaric also does not use the Tauri name – Molvic calls him Camlaen Aaric Baran
