Emarion is home to 9 Realms, each named after an immortal sibling known as the Kindred. These 9 realms, Lumnos, Fortos, Faunos, Arboros, Ignios, Umbros, Meros, Sophos and Montios are in a gigantic circle, with the Sacred Sea in the middle. The realms are interconnected through the Ring Road. This road runs through each realm in an unending loop.
A map of the Emarion continent and a quick overview of each realm is provided on Penn’s website.
Lumnos: Realm of Light and Shadow
Lumnos, the Realm of Light and Shadow, is the realm directly west from the center of Emarion. It’s known for its artists and artisans, the elegant Descended who live within Lumnos are obsessed with wealth, beauty, and power.
- Magic – Ability to control light, and/or the ability to control shadows
- Luther explains that light can be conjured and focused down to its essence, so at its purest, light can burn through almost anything and the shadows work in the same way, but it’s the absence of everything, so it’s no light, no heat, no air.
- Eye Color – Varying shades of blue eyes
- Sigil – Crescent moon inset in a shining sun, as a representation of the realm’s signature light and darkness
- Previous Ruler – King Ulther
- His reign began long ago, ages before even the oldest living mortal entered the world, and he’s gravely sick and expected to die soon
- Current Ruler – Queen Diem
- Geography – Lumnos’ terrain is known for its large, lush, leafy forests
- Gryvern – Sorae, female, alive
- She has Iridescent scales, a rainbow sheen like oil puddles, golden eyes and tuft of black fur on the end of her tail
- Mortals – Permitted with some restrictions. Lumnos is one of the more mortal-friendly realms, but options for mortals are still very limited. They are permitted to live in Lumnos City but none of them can afford to do so. In very special instances with royal permission, mortals can attend Descended schools.
- Mortals and Lumnos Descended are strictly forbidden from intermarrying and any resulting pregnancies are forcibly terminated, which means killing the child after they’re born. In the case of a hybrid pregnancy, the mortal parent is banned permanently from the realm.
- This policy was put into place centuries ago, due to the belief that the Lumnos magic was being diluted with the introduction of mortal blood into the Descended bloodlines.
The Kindred Lumnos
Mother Lumnos was the first of her Kindred Siblings to fall for and mate with a mortal and one of the first to have a Descended child. Lumnos had grey eyes like the rest of Kindred, but she gifted her offspring with blue eyes at the Forging.
It is well believed by the Lumnos Descended that Mother Lumnos can see what lies in the future. She’s been known to interact with her most devoted subjects.
A few examples include:
- Saving Luther as a child and telling him to serve the grey-eyed Queen and fulfill her dream of peace.
- Sending the visions of the battlefield to Luther and Diem
- Talking to Diem through Ulther.
- Sending Remis a vision of his first born with a mortal
When it comes to the mortals, Lumnos loved them and never wanted them forced into submission. She even commanded her Descended to guard them from harm, not be the cause of it.
Lumnos City
Lumnos City is the wealthy capital of the Realm and it is home to the elite ruling class, aka the Descended. Even the most modest homes in the city are grandiose, sprawling estates adorned with columns, terraces, and glittering chandeliers. Technically, mortals could live in Lumnos City – but none of them could ever possibly afford even the cheapest real estate here.
Those who live in Lumnos are never short on food, and oftentimes have more food than they know what to do with, unlike their mortal counterparts who are struggling to put food on the table down the road. While it’s the Descended who live in Lumnos City, some Mortals work for the Descended as Healers, delivery men, gardeners, etc.
Most Descended of Lumnos City flaunt their beauty and wealth at every opportunity. They use their magic casually and effortlessly with their fashion – like making shadows seem like living tattoos. Crazy different hair colors and styles. Think the Capitol of Pandem from Hunger Games, but with light and shadow magic, everyone’s always trying to outdo everyone.
The Palace is in Lumnos City, and is home to the current reigning Royal Family and their house. The palace itself seems to be made of light and shadow – it is magnificent and terrifying all rolled up into one.
Lumnos’ societal structure
At the very top is the King or Queen and their consort if they have one. Then the Crown’s high ranks and council, which is made up of the Crown’s advisors, High General, Warden of Light, Warden of Shadows, etc…
There’s the royal family, who lives at the palace – that’s the House of the Crown, which has been the Corbois for generations, since the past 5 Corbois Crowns haven’t been contested in the Challenging.
Next are the 20 Houses and their status is broken up into 2 groups: First are the 5 most powerful houses in the Realm, currently these are Houses Corbois, Benette, Hanoverre, Teniers, and Amraut. If these 5 make a decision the other Houses will follow. Then there’s the 15 other powerful houses that make up the 20 Houses of Lumnos.
After the 20 Houses are the Lesser Houses – this is everyone else with a house that’s NOT in one of the 20 houses, basically the general population of Lumnos Descended.
All the way at the bottom, but above the mortals, are the Unhoused Descended. These are the Descended that live on the outskirts of the realm, and are seen as inconsequential, unimportant, dirt on their boots to those in the 20 houses.
Mortal City
Mortal City is just a short walk from Lumnos City and is home to ALL the mortals in the realm. Unlike the fresh scents of freshly-baked bread or fragrant flowers that you’ll find in Lumnos City, Mortal City is known to have many foul pungent odors. While Lumnos City is dazzling in color, mortals lean into muted tones.
Mortal City is quite traditional with men being the breadwinners and women staying at home to care for the family. Girls are supposed to convey that they’re practical and selfless – the makings for an ideal wife and mother – and don’t wear much color that will jeopardize their virtue.
The Royal Guard often patrol Mortal City but they don’t help much with the actual safety of the city, most if not all of the city is known to be a harsh place to live.
Many people die from starvation or preventable diseases but the disconnect between the morals and Descended have made it impossible for the Mortals to get the help that they need to thrive. Many also work unsavory jobs they otherwise wouldn’t work as a means to afford anything for their families.
Mortal City is where the Healer’s Center is located. Meaning anytime a Descended needs a Healer they have to either go to Mortal City or send for a Healer to go to Lumnos City.
NOTE: it’s typically just the elderly or the very young who need mortal healers, instead of going to Fortos
Fortos: Realm of Force and Valor
Fortos, Realm of Force and Valor is populated by the hard-nosed, rule-obsessed soldiers, Fortos contains the headquarters and training grounds of the army that serves the nine realms. Fortos Descended live and die by their rules, the last time a Fortos King broke from the law, his own men cut him up and made his remains serve as a warning to the next King.
- Magic – Females – Ability to heal, Males – kill through rapid decay
- In the very rare case where someone is not male or female – they will have both types of magic
- Otherwise the magic is always very black and white that Females heal, and Males – kill
- Eye Color – Red
- Sigil – A sword crossed with a human bone
- Previous Ruler – King / Fortos (previous known as Child 1593-30)
- Current Ruler – Queen Diem
- The only realm that’s never had a Queen, until Diem
- Geography – Gray rocky flatlands for MILES
- Gryvern – Baldrum, male, killed in the Blood War
- The Guardians shot a bolt into its wing while it flew above the island and he died the second he touched the soil
- Mortals – Permitted with heavy restrictions
- The villages of Fortos are not as segregated as Lumnos, but they tend to keep to their own
- Fortros overall is very strict and anti any kind of rebels
The healers in Fortos are the best healers in all of Emarion and it is common for those with grave injuries to travel to Fortos to be healed or to assist with speeding up their recovery, like Perthe. It’s also common for Descented to visit the Fortos healers after their regular healing powers manifest as they grow up to remove any “imperfections” they gained in childhood like scars since they view them as a sign of weakness.
But there are cases the Fortos healers can’t help with, like when King Ulther was dying there was nothing that could be done for him once his condition declined past a certain point and they also can’t heal Godstone.
Though the villages of Fortos are not nearly as segregated as Lumnos, the mortals and the Descended keep to their own in places like taverns. The port in Fortos is large and is controlled by the Emarion Army. Its tightly regulated activity deals mainly in weapons and soldiers.
Fortos has a vault of godstone weapons that dates back to the Blood War, when the Crowns confiscated all the godstone weapons to store them because even the crowns couldn’t destroy them
The Prison
The prison in Fortos holds any and all criminals the Crowns want to put in there. This includes Mortals, MORTAL CHILDREN, Descended, Guardians, Prisoners of the Crowns.
The entrance is in a small, nondescript building, notable only for the heavy presence of soldiers. Inside, a single hallway leads to another godstone vault and another pack of beefy guards, but to get inside the prison itself, you have to go past a set of godstone doors and down a very very long staircase.
Once inside, its doors are made of godstone and are sealed with bloodlocks that only the Fortos Crown can open. This also includes a godstone saferoom for the Crowns in case of an attack, but having just the one in Fortos seems like a flaw in that back up plan.
The gates between sections are crafted out of godstone, but there’s no guards this far down into the prison. No one can get past the gates and even if they somehow did, there’s only one exit and then there is nothing but flatlands for MILES, meaning any escaped prisoners would be spotted in minutes.
Inside the Descended cells is only a flattened mat of moldy hay, a dingy bucket, and a food that looks like it’s been rotting for weeks. They are heavily drugged with flameroot to make their magic not only nullified, but make them docile.
As for the Mortals they are kept down a second set of stairs, in large, hay-covered pens. Like the other cells, they are brutally sparse–the air reeks of a putrid scent, the scattered buckets overflowing with waste and the room is kept freezing, but the prisoners only have thin tunics, no blankets.
Rules of the prison:
- Weapons are not allowed in the prison, for obvious reasons
- In regards to Prisoners of the Crowns only the Crowns are allowed to talk to/question these prisoners
- They can also be released if they get a vote of 6 Crowns, more on this in a bit
- For regular prisoners, the only visitors allowed inside the prison are the prisoners’ mates
- The laws apply to everyone equally. Even, sadly, children.
The Army
The Emarion Army supplies and trains soldiers for all of Emarion and guards the Courelle island by patrolling the waters around it. Though led by the Fortos King, the army’s ranks include mortals and Descended from every realm, except Umbros who doesn’t permit her subjects to join the army.
The army can be summoned by any of the Crowns if a conflict goes beyond what the realm’s own internal Royal Guard can handle. Descended soldiers in the army have their first allegiance for their army oath and loyalty to their home realm is secondary.
NOTE: Guardians are placed strategically within the Army to divert weapons and relay plans, like Brecke and Auralie respectively.
The army is permitted to use Godstone weapons when necessary.
Most of the army’s spies are women and all of the higher ups in command are men. We know from Andrei that many of his old soldier friends bemoan that women are “distractions” among the infantry’s ranks.
Fortos doesn’t have the resources to take on too many new soldiers at once, they barely have enough weapons as it is and they have to BUY them from different places like the Evrim in Lumnos fairly commonly.
Back before the blood war the Army was different. Fortos was given control of the continent’s army under the agreement it would act only with the consent of all Crowns. During the Blood War, the Crowns disagreed on how far the army should go to stop the rebellion. It was nearly impossible for them to come to any unanimous agreement, so a decision was made that the army could act on a vote of six Crowns, instead of nine. Some concessions were given in exchange, the use of godstone for example.
King / Fortos
He doesn’t have a name, no one from Fortos does, as a child he was known as Child 1593-30 and now he’s just known as his title or realm.
He is the leader of the entire Emarion Army and is known to be a blunt bastard. A hulking giant of a man with thighs like redwoods and a brick wall of a chest, and his body is so over-swollen with muscle his shoulders bunched at his ears. His crown is a tangled cluster of veins, rhythmically pulsing like it has a heartbeat of its own.
While he might be the king, his aura doesn’t even carry a candle to Luther’s power… so that’s saying something…
He has a general distaste for Diem, and blames her for being the reason he lost two of his most valuable assets: her parents.
Faunos: Realm of Beast and Brute
The Descended here live by the same code as the animal kingdom they control: hunt or become the prey.
- Magic – Ability to communicate with and/or conjure all forms of animal life
- Eye Color – Yellow
- Geography – Humid jungles
- Sigil – A hissing serpent coiled around the head of howling wolf
- Current Ruler – Queen Ailani
- From my impression of her, she’s all about looking out for her own – but is still somewhat friendly, but in a “oh you scare me” kind of way
- Gryvern – Rosha, female, alive
- Mortals – Forbidden unless passing though on the Ring Road.
Arboros: Realm of Root and Thorn
Arboros is one of the southernmost realms of Emarion. Its western border is Faunos and its eastern neighbor is Ignois. Mortals cannot enter Arboros from Ignois, so they can only come by following the Ring Road through Faunos or by sea.
- Magic – Ability to communicate with and/or conjure plant life
- Eye Color – Green
- Sigil – A long-stemmed flower entwined with a stalk of wheat
- Current Ruler – Queen Mireille
- Geography – The laid-back farming villages are tucked into the redwood forests. Rich vegetation which supplies many medicinal plants used by healers across the continent
- Gryvern – Onaar, female, alive
- Mortals – Permitted with minor restrictions
- It is one of the few realms still friendly to mortals
The thick trunks of the redwoods are as wide as a horse, covered in ropey vines, and stretch hiiiigh into the sky. It’s home to lush ferns and rainbow-hued flowers dotting the landscape. With its rich, green vegetation and being the realm of plantlife, it’s no surprise that many medicinal plants grow in Arboros.
With Arboros being the best realm for especially difficult-to-find ingredients, it makes sense that its massive annual medicinal herb market is a must-visit trip for Mortal Healers, like how Auralie would go every year, and often bring Diem along.
Arboros also has laid-back farming villages tucked into the redwood forests.
There is an Arboros City which we don’t know anything about and the realm has its own Mortal City, located near the Ring Road.
Arboros is one of the few realms still friendly to mortals, and they are permitted to live here with only minor restrictions. This is part of what makes Arboros the primary realm for Guardians, as well as the fact that the Arboros Queen is working with the Guardians.
Queen Mireille
Queen Mireille has been letting them operate freely in her realm for years. She helped the rebels get on and off the island on the day of the attack, going so far as to pretend to be chained to throw off any suspicion.
This is because Queen Mireille is also secretly a half-mortal. She and her mortal father were very close. She promised him on his deathbed that she would do everything she could to help the mortals. She’s been on the Guardians’ side for an unknown amount of time.
Queen Mireille also has a deep love for all things nature. And believes the natural course of life is to propagate and spread and she doesn’t believe anyone should be denying this.
Ignios: Realm of Sand and Flame
Though it was once a land of warm hospitality, woe to any traveler unlucky enough to cross the ruthless, infamously violent Descended now roam the harsh Ignios deserts.
- Magic – Ability to control sand and/or fire
- Eye Color – Orange
- Sigil – A sand dune curving around an open flame
- Ruler – King Hamsid
- Geography – Sun-scorched harsh deserts
- Gryvern – Tybold (male, alive)
- He’s known as a mean, nasty brute
- Tybold is an enormous beast. nearly twice Sorae’s size, with golden feathers on his wings and scales of shimmering tan that seemed forged from the desert itself. A line of horns, each filed to a spear-sharp tip, ran up his snout and down his long neck
- He is also Sorae’s beau who she’s been separated from for millennia
- Mortals – Banned, even traveling on the Ring Road is certain death.
- Literally – When a mortal steps across the border into Ignios, they burst into flame
Ignois used to be famous for its hospitality before the Blood war centuries ago. The Ring Road was packed with shops and inns welcoming travelers. They even had patrols to help anyone lost out in the dunes.
They had the least resources of all nine realms, but they were the first to offer them up to anyone passing through. It’s like they understood how treacherous their realm’s environment was, and wanted to be as helpful as possible for anyone entering.
Geography
Iginos is covered from end to end with rolling sun-scorched deserts. These deserts are extremely hot during the day and frigid at night. The Ignios coastline is short, it only takes about a day to get from Arboros to Umbros when staying near the water.
The climate is unrelenting with harsh sun, sandstorms, no vegetation, and minimal accessible water… the list goes on, but scattered throughout the desert there are oases that are crucial to life here, with palm trees, citrus plants and springs for fresh clean water. One of these oases was the center of their Mortal City, which used to be located by the sea, near the Arboros border.
NOTE: The Ignois king mentions his palace and we’re going to guess it’s a bit far from the ghost town of Mortal City, since he glew here on his gryvern
History
During the Blood War, Ignios tried to stay neutral and keep out of the fighting, which definitely aligns with their hospitable nature we were just talking about, but neither side would let Ignois stay neutral.
The essential oases started getting poisoned, which led the Descended and mortals to each blame it on the other instead of looking beyond the borders for an outsider that might be the cause.
The army refused to send soldiers to help unless Ignios joined the war effort. Tybold took on three of the other Gryverns at once when the other Crowns were trying to force Ignios into joining. He gravely wounded the Montios gryvern which is why it was weak enough for the guardians to kill it.
Eventually the Ignois Crown had to give in before the entire realm became uninhabitable, and the rebels hit them hard for it. By the end of the war, there was hardly anyone from Ignios left.
Those who did survive never let go of their anger, they stopped welcoming outsiders. When the current Crown took his throne, he banished all the mortals and for the Descended who are traveling through the realm, they must remain on the Ring Road unless they’ve been given an invitation from the king himself.
Mortal Relations
Mortal are banned, even crossing the border to travel on the Ring Road means certain death. Literally – When a mortal steps across the border into Ignios, fire engulfs their body and consumes them in an instant. It only takes seconds and all that’s left is a charred husk.
After the Blood War and the Crown passed to the current King of Ignios, he closed his borders to the mortals and was the one to ban them. He didn’t trust the Umbros Queen and didn’t want the mortals escaping to Umbros for safety and risk the Ignios mortals giving up any information to her on his defenses. While a few of the lucky ones made it out, sadly the majority didn’t.
According to the Guardians, which we know is mostly confirmed, the king had his guards flush them out into the dunes, and they stood there for a week while the mortals cooked to death under the sun. They begged for their lives, and he wouldn’t even use his fire magic to give them a quick death.
Umbros: Realm of Mind and Secret
Carved into the canyons, the dark markets of Umbros sell all manner of sins, with only one rule: the Queen always gets her due.
- Magic – Ability to read and/or control minds
- Eye Color – Black
- Sigil – A human skull, its throat encircled by a chain
- Previous Ruler – Queen Yrselle
- About – Old and immensely powerful, strikingly beautiful and feared by the other Crowns. After the Blood War she ordered the slaughter of all but 100 of the Umbros Descended in order to keep her magic undiluted and strong.
- Current Ruler – Queen Diem
- Geography – Black rock canyons under a perpetual night
- Gryvern – Cyranei, female, alive
- She is larger than Sorae, with sleek, feminine lines and a graceful gait. Her wings and fur are a dark caramel hue, and her scales glitter like godstone.
- Mortals – Permitted to live and work freely without restriction.
- Mortals tend to work in less than savory career paths, including assassins, spies, courtesans, and opium dealers.
Umbros is known for being a haven of darkness and sin.
Mortals in at least Lumnos grow up hearing rumors about how it is a place where nothing is sacred and everything is for sale. If you have the money, whatever you want is yours for the taking.
Carved into the canyons, the dark markets of Umbros sell all manner of sins, with only one rule: the Queen always gets her cut. If Meros is the central port for the inter-realm trade of legitimate wares, Umbros is its sneaky evil twin.
They are also known for their port, which has NEVER closed… Not even during or after the blood war.
Umbros is known for being a melting pot of Descended and mortals alike.
If a Foreign Descended pays tithes to the Queen they are permitted to use their magic in this realm and some of them are put to work – like Lumnos Descended who use their light magic as the realm’s way of lighting the city underground in the dark.
Geography
The entire capital is built underground, carved into the realm’s sky-high canyons of matte black rock. You have to enter through a long tunnel that descends into Umbros City.
Cast into perpetual evening, its residents thrive on the sins of the night no matter the hour.
The main square is a cavernous hall extending a mile in every direction—including up. Several levels of carved archways are stacked along the walls, and with tunnels splintering off as far as the eye can see.
Although there is darkness, it is also a place of life. The mammoth, bustling central market is packed with merchants selling every creation imagined.
The air is rich with a medley of smells—roasted meats, heady incense, fragrant spices, intoxicating perfumes—and fluttering with textiles that paint the room in vibrant colors. Crowds of raucous spectators ringed sandy fighting pits, and caged beasts chirped, snarled, and hissed at passersby.
There is no segregation, no poor village where mortals are shoved to be subjugated and unseen. Vendors and consumers alike are a melting pot of mortal and Descended, man and woman, local and foreign, and everything in between.
The Palace
The palace of Umbros is also carved into the canyons, high above the city. A system of pulley-drawn lifts carry the Queen and her Centenaries up and down at their leisure, but there is also a seemingly endless set of narrow spiral stairs for those not permitted to ride in the lifts.
Unlike the perpetual night of the underground city, daylight spills in through tall, narrow slits carved into the black rock walls. The floor is inlaid with gold-veined marble, and towering columns carved into the shape of dragons guarded each corridor. Elaborate, flame-lit lanterns hang from frescoed ceilings depicting scenes of debauchery.
Pools of velvet cushions and golden carts bearing liquors and spirits are scattered at random, as if the palace’s residents might find themselves in need of a bed or a drink on a moment’s notice. The air is often heavy with rich incense, languid music—and moans.
Queen Yrselle
She is fiercely powerful and feared by the other realms for her mind magic.
Yrselle is strikingly beautiful – sex incarnate. She’s on the mature end for a Descended, with a striking mix of full lips, long ebony hair, hourglass silhouette and dark olive skin.
She reigned through the Blood War, so she’s been ruling for centuries, and is distrusted by the other Crowns. But she isn’t all business – she runs a tight ship in her realm, but she enjoys the finer things in life and lots of pleasures
Centenaries
After the Blood War that they almost lost, many realms put limits on Descended breeding in order to prevent their magic from diluting, but Yrselle was the most extreme – she ordered the slaughter of all but the most powerful 100 Umbros Descended in order to keep their magic undiluted and strong.
NOTE: The others volunteered to die – they considered it an honor, and Yrselle didn’t execute unwilling people.
These 100 are known as Centenaries, and they are her small but formidable personal army and they are fiercely loyal to their Queen. They ensure the realm runs smoothly and nothing gets by their queen.
There are ONLY ever 100 Centenaries.
They are each immensely powerful, their staggering thought magic can read someone’s mind like a book and bend them to their will with hardly a thought, making them the perfect enforcers in a realm populated with liars and thieves.
There is no secret the Centenaries can’t uncover, no deception they can’t detect. They collect their Queen’s share of the profits with perfect efficiency, and because she can read their minds, even they don’t dare cross her.
They’re all open books, with no secrets and believe it is rather freeing.
They also love to party, especially with sex drugs and alcohol.
Mortal Relations
Mortals are permitted to live and work freely without restriction in this realm.
Umbros is the only place where mortals and Descended from all realms were welcome without restriction, the career paths they might find were less than savory: assassins, spies, courtesans, opium dealers, and the like.
NOTE: This is where Luther and Auralie smuggle the half-mortal children. The queen is already aware of what Luther is doing, she read Zalaric’s mind years ago and chose to look the other way.
Meros: Realm of Sea and Sky
The rowdy, fun-loving citizens of Meros love a good sail on the open sea and a hearty ale to welcome them home.
- Magic – Ability to control wind and/or water
- Eye Color – Blue-green
- Sigil – A cresting wave beneath a swirling gust
- Previous Ruler – King Obaneryn
- Current Ruler – Queen Diem
- Geography – Home to Emarion’s largest and busiest port. It is the primary for all nine realms.
- Gryvern – Arilloc, male, alive
- Mortals – Permitted with some restrictions
Sophos: Realm of Thought and Spark
Sophos is known for their obsession with knowledge and their cutting-edge innovations but their innovations aren’t allowed to leave Sophos unless it’s a coronation gift.
- Magic – Sophos descended can have one or both of their realms powers
- The power of spark—a buzzing, electrifying current that gives power to many of their cutting-edge inventions
- The power of thought—an ability to memorize everything they’d ever seen, heard, or read, turning their head into a trove from which they could recall even the tiniest detail with ease
- Eye Color – Pink
- Sigil – An open book illuminated by a glowing spark
- Current Ruler – Crown Doriel
- About – Non-binary and “beautiful beyond words”. Insists on being called by their name and NOT their title, claiming the only thing titles do is encourage an inflated ego.
- Geography – Futuristic cities of Sophos contain Emarion’s largest libraries and a number of prestigious, invitation-only research institutions
- Gryvern – Vexes, male, alive, plump and petite, accustomed to a life of spoiled leisure
- Mortals – Permitted by invitation only
- Mortals can earn a spot at one of its universities, but it is very difficult
- Mortals and Descended commingle and most residential buildings are communal with a diverse mix of people
- Examples of Sophos gifts –
- The microphone used in the Lumnos arena
- The boats the Crowns use to get to the island
- The orb of answering
Geography
Rolling grasslands with futuristic cities. Sophos City has towering buildings of metal and glass in mind-bending designs that defy the laws of nature. They have Paved streets bustling with machines that zip around carrying people – in other words, the Emarion version of a car.
Sophos also contains Emarion’s largest libraries and a number of prestigious, invitation-only research institutions.
The Sophos Library
The sophos library isn’t just ANY library. The Library of Sophos contains every book that has ever been written in Emarion. Even when the Crowns decreed that all books on the mortal religions and histories are to be destroyed, a handful of copies were set aside for the archives here. There are stacks of books, endless shelves packed to the brim with rare tomes.
It has a beautiful hand-painted ceiling that was built by The Mortals of old.
Temple of the Everflame
This Temple was originally given to the Descended of sophos for safekeeping.
There was a time when the continent was full of magnificent buildings just like this Temple but the wars between The Mortals, before the kindred’s arrival, caused many casualties including buildings, art, Maps, books, etc…
The ruler of these lands offered their remaining treasures to Father Sophos in the hopes that he would protect them from meeting the same fate and Sophos has copious records on these mortal creations.
It was the 4th Sophos Crown that ordered the destruction of the temple and Doriel, the current crown, agrees that this was a poor decision. According to Doriel, any mortal can request a visit and every worthy request is granted.
There’s a catch: in order for a request to be deemed worthy the person must have a documented history of study and interest, trustworthy references, and no criminal activity.
Greenhouses
Sophos also has magnificent Greenhouses with a glass-paneled dome, filled with an impressive variety of plants. Here, researchers are trying to breed hardier versions of rare medicinal plants to grow in other soils and climates, increasing the amount of people who can access them.
Mental Institutions
They have Mental institutions for anyone mentally unstable or supposedly mentally unstable, like Luther’s Mother, Florille.
Seedy Underbelly
Just like any City, Sophos City also has a seedy underbelly that its leaders refused to acknowledge.
In these dark alleys, sex and drugs are on sale around the clock and for a mortal losing their place here could mean losing everything, so many turn to mind-enhancing substances to keep up with their descended colleagues, some ending up addicted and ruining their lives in the process.
The Realms Residence
Mortals are permitted by invitation only. Mortals can earn a spot at one of its universities or as a researcher, but it is very difficult. If a Mortal is even caught breathing too close to someone who is suspected of being a rebel they are banned for life.
Mortals here get paid so much that most of them send money back home to their families. Thieves realized this and started targeting anyone with relatives in sofas so people began faking their debts. Their loved ones know that they’re safe but everyone else from their home realm thinks they’re dead.
This is how they protect their people, but this rumor has been twisted to mean that when a mortal outlives their usefulness in conducting research, they BECOME the research themselves. According to Henri (and the guardians), the Descended experiment put them in cages to run tests, sometimes with medicine and sometimes with magic or weapons.
There is a little truth to this rumor: there are experiments that are done to Mortals but those Mortals volunteer, they want to do something useful with their lives and they get paid a fortune to leave behind for their families.
It is seen as a very noble choice. The results of these experiments save thousands of lives and the money The Mortals make will keep their families out of poverty for generations. Overall The Mortals in Sophos are really happy, they’re treated well and they’re proud of the work they do.
Mortals and Descended commingle and most residential buildings are communal with a diverse mix of people. Citizens are expected to embrace a love of curiosity not just in their research but also in their private time as well. To encourage this each quarter within the city held nightly events featuring Music Theater and food or neighbors can mingle and learn something new.
While they embrace this communal aspect, the Descended are still freely able to come and go as they please and the city is closed to mortals except by invitation, like we covered earlier. Even in Sophos classrooms are segregated to prevent mortal children from learning things the crowns deem too dangerous for them to know.
Most residents dressed smartly with cleanly tailored suits in elegant fabrics, some even wearing ballooning sleeves and oversized jeweled buttons and overcoats that trailed like billowing capes. The residents of Sophos are always rushing to get from place to place and they don’t like when people are just kind of casually strolling through the streets making it more difficult to get where they are going.
Guards
Just like the rest of the realms, Sophos has guards but they’re not as war ready as the rest of the realms.
The people of Sophos are first and foremost academics. The worst crime the guards deal with are stolen books–they’re not prepared for war. Most of them don’t even have weapons.
Crown Doriel
Insists on being called by their name and NOT their title, claiming the only thing titles do is encourage an inflated ego.
They are non-binary and described as “beautiful beyond words” with androgynous features, and a clean shaven head. Their crown is a ring of crackling sparks that splinter out like lightning. They also have a very powerful aura, strong enough to make both Diem and Luther a little hesitant
The sophos crown is also in charge of the rituals and responsible for guiding the rest of the crowns through them and making sure everything goes according to the rules and traditions.
Montios: Realm of Stone and Ice
It is located northwest in the Emarion continent circle, with Lumnos as its southern neighbor and Sophos as its eastern neighbor.
Little is known about the reclusive, druidic residents of the snowy Montios mountains, who are rarely seen and refuse to speak to outsiders. They are the only realm that is run by a Crown Council, where the Crown is only one member of the council
- Magic – Ability to control rock and/or ice and snow
- Eye Color – Purple
- Sigil – A trio of snow-capped mountain peaks
- Previous Ruler – King Renmai
- About – an old frail-looking man, he uses a walking stick and just like the rest of his realm refuses to talk to anyone who is not from Montios
- Was the only other Crown around during the Blood War
- Current Ruler – Queen Diem
- Geography – The largest of the 9 realms, with stunning snow-capped lavender mountains.
- Gryvern – Rymari, female, deceased, and she was friends with Sorae
- She was the oldest of the gryverns, pure white from tongue to tail, with scales like opals.
- Killed centuries ago during the Blood War.
- When the Ignios gryvern took on three at once during the Blood War when the other Crowns were trying to force Ignios into joining. He gravely wounded the Montios gryvern and that’s why she was weak enough for the Guardians to kill her
- This area is spelled so that only the Montios Crown is allowed to step foot inside the spot where she died, the snow falls continuously above a perfect circle of an unblemished grassy plateau
- Mortals – Banned because the terrain and weather is too harsh for them
Geography
Montios is the largest realm in Emarion, and this is because it was once 2 different realms until it was redrawn into one very large realm. Only 1 half is really used, the other half, the forgotten lands, is largely ignored, but more on that in a bit.
The endless lilac slopes stretch the length of the horizon and while it’s beautiful with all its mountains, the Montios terrain is desolate, too harsh for most life to survive. Due to the snowy winter-like conditions there is also little vegetation within the realm.
That’s not to say there isn’t ANY vegetation or wildlife, there are streams with an abundance of animals. This includes a very specific rare herb that only grows here. This is the herb that would have been the cure for Henri’s mother’s illness.
At least one of the cities of this realm is underground. To get to this underground city, you have to enter through the caves, which open to a cliff that disappears into a deep ravine. Using their ice magic the Montios Descended are able to create spiraling bridges that go into the ravine.
After you go down the bridge, you enter a tunnel of carved stone which has a room for visitors since no one but Montios Descended are allowed past this point.
With a Montios Descended’s touch on a huge rock slab, a doorway will appear with the Montios sigil etched into it. After which you’re in the atrium with the high ceilings crafted entirely of ice. This icy ceiling allows them to light up the space but also it keeps their location unknown from the outside. The atrium has towering stone columns and firelit torches at the center of the room is a statue of Mother Montios.
Politics and Society
Montios Descended are extremely isolated from the rest of Emarion. Once their magic comes in, they don’t speak to outsiders. Some of them even choose to never speak again at all ever, even to those of their own Realm. This practice is because Blessed Mother Montios made these mountains her home because she believed being isolated and spending time in silence enhances the mind and opens them to higher truths.
So the children, before their magic comes in, can speak to outsiders – as we experienced in this stretch of chapters with the young girl speaking for the group of Montios until only Montios Descended (including Diem) were present.
They also dislike weapons, preferring to use their magic instead.
Montios governs itself differently from the other realms. Their Council, not their Crown, makes the decisions for the realm. The Crown is a member of the Council, but the rest are chosen by the people of Montios.
The Crown has the same voting power as the rest of the members with the exception of when they can’t come to an agreement in which the Crown then gets to make the final decision.
The council is elected by the realm’s descended people.
King Renmai
King Renmai was the late Montios crown. He was an old frail-looking man and used a walking stick. Just like the rest of his realm, he refused to talk to anyone who is not from Montios.
He was the only other Crown that was alive during the blood war along with Yrselle. Considering how old he was in our story, seemingly much older than Yrselle, I’d guess he was mature for a Descended even back then.
Mortal Relations
Mortals are banned in Montios, which was done for their own protection. The Mortals cannot survive the climate here as well as the Descended can and they were finding their corpses on the mountain dead from hunger and the cold and they didn’t want to see any more lives lost.
The Descended originally reached out to the Mortals to offer help but the mortals did not trust the council. This is because it is only filled with Descended and the mortals weren’t even allowed to vote on its members.
Even though Mortals are technically forbidden, it’s easy for them to still access the realm as there aren’t the same magical restrictions like Ignios has. Because of this mortals can just waltz into the realm and hide out like the large Guardian Camp in the forgotten lands.
NOTE: The council does know that this camp is here; they just decided to turn a blind eye to it because it’s in the forgotten lands and the Descended avoid going there.
Forgotten Lands
The Forgotten lands is actually the lost realm of the 10th kindred, Omnos, but no one except Sophos Crown knows that. To the Montios Descended, this is an area of the realm in which they do not enter, they say the land is evil and cursed. Few Descended are willing to go, and most who do are never seen again.
When the lavender mountains end, a dark forest set on a series of steep hills forms. Its trees are blackened and gnarled, like they’ve been burned or poisoned. At the center, is a valley so deep you can’t see the bottom. Though it was within Montios borders, it feels angrily disconnected, like it’s being rejected by the realm itself.
Coeurîle
Coeurîle is the island at the center of Emarion; it is separated from the mainland by the Sacred Sea.
Coeurîle is the neutral, central location for all the rituals of the 9 Crowns. These rituals are Forging day and the Rite of Coronation. It’s supposed to be the most well-guarded place in Emarion with a fleet of Fortosian Ships patrolling just off the island’s shores.
In mortal schools they are taught that Coeurîle houses the Kindred’s Temple, this is where the sibling gods conducted the Forging spell that divided Emarion into its realms. While in Descended schools, it’s taught that the mortal leaders gave the island to the Kindred as a gift and as a symbol of the mortal’s willing submission to Descended rule, but in forbidden books, it’s told that Coeurîle was a sacred place long before the Kindred arrived.
It is believed that this island was once the home to the Everflame: the sacred Tree of Life and Death from the old mortal religions. According to these books, once the Kindred arrived, they decided to anoint themselves as divine rulers and chopped the Everflame down to make room for their Temple.
Coeurîle is also the location of the Blood War that was fought centuries ago. The island was a fiercely sought-after prize that both the mortal rebels and Descended wanted for themselves. Not only is the island symbolically cherished by both sides, it is also the only battleground in Emarion where the Descended have to fight the mortals without the benefit of their magic or their gryverns, placing them on near-equal footing and by the end of the battle the ground was covered in rivers of blood, from both sides.
Due to how hard the Descended were fighting to keep the island out of Mortal hands, rumors started to speculate that maybe the Temple was the source of all Descended magic.
Geography / What’s found there
Coeurîle is a lush island full of wild overgrowth, tall vegetation and growing grass, and walls of foliage, along with fields of flameroot flowers. There are gravel roads that weave in and out of the grassy hills and through endless fields of flameroot wildflowers. We also learn from the King of Fortos that all roads on the island lead to the Temple.
The Kindred Temple is the main structure on Coeurîle and is built to serve as a symbolic map of Emarion. It is made entirely of godstone, with a staircase that curves around the outside to a circular platform high above the ground, edged nearly all the way around by a series of ornate archways topped with tall, thin obelisks. Each of these obelisks are topped with a flame-lit cauldron.
Each of the nine arches pointed toward its respective realm, with the realm emblems etched into the floor AND carved deep into the tall obelisks, where they glow as if lit from within.
In the center of the open-air rotunda, representing the island of Coeurîle, a low pedestal holds the heartstone. Which like the mortal rumors said is the Crowns’ most precious secret, a truth they each guard with their life because if the heartstone is destroyed, the realms will crumble and fall.
Near the Temple is a hidden door that leads to the underground chamber that Ophiucae was held in. This chamber door is nearly invisible behind overgrown weeds.
Rules of Coeurîle
Before stepping foot on Coeurîle there are a few rules to follow.
- Exceptions: The Crowns can permit access to the island for special occasions, like when Ulther was sick, someone had to bring a vile of his blood to the Forging Day ceremony
- Only the Crowns are permitted to step on the island’s ground, everyone else is forbidden. And even then they are only permitted during the rituals.
- Or when the King of Fortos sent Aurelie to the island for a spying mission
- NOTE: Yes this was hush hush from the other Crowns BUT she was still giving access by a Crown so we’re counting it
- When a Crown goes to the island for a meeting or ritual they can’t bring weapons, escorts, gryverns or use magic.
- The last two, no gryverns or magic, are impossible rules to skirt around.
- When the Kindred cast the Forging Spell they also made it so no magic can work on the island and gryverns are not able to set off on the ground without dying instantly.
- When Diem steps foot onto the island for the first time she describes the feeling of losing her magic as a horrible emptiness engulfing her body, and as if my very soul had been siphoned out. She couldn’t conjure shadows, feel Sorae, or even feel the Forging magic of Lumnos.
- As for the other two rules, there was no one standing guard to check for weapons and with how easy Luther was able to get on to the island, these feel more like the honor system.
- The last two, no gryverns or magic, are impossible rules to skirt around.
- Crowns are not allowed to step off the path until after they are coronated.
- We at FFG assume that this is due to the flameroot that grows on the island but again nothing is stopping someone from stepping off the path
